For a fun rainy-day activity, keep an art box. Use any box or plastic bin to keep random art supplies at the ready. Get creative anything can be used as art supplies. Throw in old magazines, tissue paper, toilet paper tubes, packing peanuts or just about anything. It makes for a great creative activity on a day when you hear “I’m bored” one time too many.
You may think all those public service announcements will serve to teach your teens they should stay away from drugs, protect themselves from STDs, and to be responsible drivers, but that’s usually not the case. Parents need to discuss these issues with their children, explain their values and express what they expect from their kids.
Make it a point to know who your child’s friends are and if at all possible, their parents as well. If your child is really good friends with another child, you will have already met the parents. However, it is important for you to know who all your child’s friends are as much as possible.
Make sure that you make meal time fun for your toddler. This can involve cutting your foods into fun shapes, using many colors or textures, or using a fun plate to feed them on. This will encourage them to actually finish their meal when you sit them down to eat it.
Educate yourself on how to disagree the right way. Disagreements between you and your partner are going to happen. It’s just part of life. But one of the toughest things children can see is loud and inappropriate fighting going on between the adults in their lives. It’s important to learn how to disagree properly with your significant other to keep your child out of very awkward situations.
To get your child to take his or her foul-tasting medicine, try mixing it with a little chocolate syrup. You can also refrigerate the medicine to make the taste a little duller. Most medicines can be refrigerated, just make sure the bottle does not say not to refrigerate before placing in the fridge.
It is just as important for children as it is for parents to have time away from each other. This can be for an evening or for a weekend. Make use of helpful grandparents who want to give you a break. Even if you do not feel like you need a break from your child, you do. Keep both of you thriving by taking little breaks from each other. It is healthy.
Being a parent has its fair share of rewards. When you see your child make the right choice or take someone else’s feelings into consideration above their own, you beam with pride. Take the time to use some of these suggestions and have an easier time raising your little ones into amazing adults.
